Abstract
Experimental data on selected freshwater and marine environments are presented which indicate that Ca2+-organic interactions exert significant influence on the biogeochemistry of Ca2+. Organisms respond to excess Ca2+ in the environment by releasing large quantities of Ca2+-affine organic matter. Such organic matter appears to participate in foam formation in coastal seas. In the open ocean it facilitates the formation and stabilization of macroflocs. The biogeochemical implications of these findings are discussed.
