Abstract
The immediate response of Natatolana borealis (Lilljeborg) to salinity which was reduced by more than 5 psu, was observed in the laboratory. N. borealis was able to sense sudden reduction in salinity and it responded by curling the body and rubbing the pleopods with the posterior pereopods. The tolerance of the isopod to different salinity and temperature conditions was examined in a laboratory cross test during 14 days. The tolerance to reduced salinity was significantly less at 17-18 °C than at 6-7 °C. None of the isopods survived in salinities less than 20.7 psu. The vertical distribution in the Norwegian fjords and the horizontal distribution in the Northeast Atlantic of N. borealis may be partly affected by the avoidance of salinities lower than 26-30 psu.
