Abstract
Sand elimination during the first days after fishing was studied quantitatively in commercially fished Mytilus edulis. Three phases can be distinguished in the elimination process: a first stage with a large and rapid discharge (15 minutes), a second stage of an exponentially decreasing rate (4 hours) and a last stage proceeding slowly (4 to 48 hours). The results of the experiments are compared with published reports on the effects of activities of ciliary systems on feeding and internal transport in mussels.
