Abstract
Sediment trap samples and undisturbed cores of bottom sediment were obtained during spring and summer from a 350-m-deep site in the Laurentian Trough, Gulf of St. Lawrence, and used to determine the flux of organic carbon concentration profiles close to the sediment-water interface. Oxygen uptake rates by the sediment, calculated from micro-electrode profiles and a one-dimensional molecular diffusion transport model, can only account for 20% of the organic carbon that is mineralized in the sediment. Mechanisms other than molecular diffusion must dominate the transport of oxygen across the sediment-water interface in these deep coastal segments.
