Abstract
    In order to demonstrate the effects of adding extracted soybean meal that had previously undergone different levels of heat treatment, to conventional rations for sea bass, a biological trial was carried out on a homogeneous group of sea bass (420 fish of 36g average live weight), fed with experimental diets and kept in six tanks supplied with filtered and aerated seawater. The experimental diets were formulated starting with the raw materials usually used in commercial feeds, and then substituting 30% of extracted soybean meal for an amount of animal meal. Five levels of residual trypsin inhibitor activity were chosen for the extracted soybean meal that was to be added to the experimental diets, thus obtaining live diets in addition to a control provided by a commercial feed. All the diets were iso- nitrogenous and iso-energetic. The results, statistically elaborated, show a direct proportion between the intensity of the heat treatments and weight gains. High trypsin inhibitor levels in soybean meal, reduce the growth of sea bass. Therefore the extracted soybean meal, if it is suitably cooked and supplemented, can be used as a possible substitute for protein meals of animal origin in the preparation of feed also for saltwater fish.
