Abstract
Control and timing of reproduction is an essential part of succesful hatchery management and can be of critical importance for restocking.Mature smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomiei) maintained in a recycling system were exposed to two different temperature/photoperiod regimes to modify their gonadal development cycle and their spawning time. Gonadal development was monitored in terms of oocytes dimension and stages of maturation, and compared to the condition factor. Using this technique, spawning occurred 6 months in advance under a short winter regime and was retarded for up to 2 months under a long winter regime. The spawning season was extended from 15 days to 8 months. This technique permits fish to be restocked in spring and attain the size of 2-year-olds by the end of the first summer or only 9 months after hatching.
