Abstract
There are more than 20 hydroelectric reservoirs in northern Portugal, especially in the Cávado and Douro basins. The total area of these reservoirs is of several hundreds of ha and their maximum depth is sometimes more than 10m. A general ecological survey of some of these reservoirs has been made which suggest good possibilities for aquaculture in floating net-cages and also for sport-fishing development as a way to increase touristic industry. The limitative factor can be the surface temperature during some hours a few days in summer but colder water is available some meters below. An experiment with rainbow trout has been carried out by the Institute of Zoology and the Faculty of Sciences in the Caniçada reservoir and an industrial plant has been built in the Alto Rabagao Reservoir now managed by Noraqua. It has a hatchery with a capacity of producing 250 000 fingerlings and a grow-out farm with a capacity of 300t of salmonid trout ranging from 2 to 3kg.yr-1.
