Abstract
This paper identifies the importance of water quality for intensive fish culture and briefly summarizes appropriate criteria. Both long term, seasonal, and short term natural fluctuations in factors such as temperature, light, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients are identified and their significance considered. Fluctuations in water quality also result from management actions such as feeding, tank cleaning, disease treatments and alterations in water flow rates. System design is important as it can modify the impact of internal fluctuations. The implications of exposing fish to water quality fluctuations in high density culture systems are considered in terms of both their behavioural and physiological responses. Management techniques, including the manipulation of feed composition and feeding regimes, aimed at reducing fluctuations in water quality are briefly identified. Problems of water quality monitoring are briefly considered, together with the design of robust measuring devices.
