Abstract
The worldwide increase in aquaculture has brought this industry into conflict with other users of the natural aquatic resource and individuals and organizations concerned about the ecological effects of this industry. Aquaculture can impact on its surrounding environment and in some cases ecological, social, and economic change has reduced the long-term profitability of aquaculture. The sustainability of this industry therefore requires an integrated evaluation of the environmental issues to ensure that the full potential of aquaculture is realized but that this potential is not at the expense of the natural environment and that there is equitable use of the aquatic resource. This necessitates an understanding of the interactions between aquaculture and aquatic ecosystems and the social and economic effects of aquaculture development. This paper reviews some of the main environmental issues related to aquaculture development and discusses the value of integrated planning and environmental impact assessment in minimizing ecological change and avoiding or reducing social and economic conflict.
