| Abstract |
In 1999 the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr John Prescott announced that £25 million would be set aside for the regeneration of the river Thames. This paper argues that the regeneration of any river in isolation, particularly the Thames, delivers, at best, only a relatively short term boost to the local economy. It would therefore have been better to have spent the grant on an investigation into the long term feasibility of creating a commercial inland waterway system in the United Kingdom. The paper thus looks at established river systems, particularly on the continent, with regard to their contribution to the economies of the riparian countries. |
