| Abstract |
Each inland waterway implies some very specific restrictions on vessel maximal dimensions and her other particularities. These constrains are sometimes obvious, but could also impact the vessel design indirectly in a strange and unexpected way. The task of the designer is to anticipate and fulfill these limitations together with the owner’s requirements, and achieve a “good vessel” that complies with the best of engineering logic. This paper discusses the preliminary design process and introduces a procedure for the assessment of optimal vessel characteristics for a specific waterway. It also introduces some new coefficients to rank the inland container vessel abilities, and compares them to the seagoing ships. It discusses vessel stability, weight, speed, propulsion system etc. and reconsiders (and questions) some of the common beliefs concerning this type of vessels. |
