Abstract |
A study to compare the dry weights of unpreserved calanoid copepods (Eurytemora affinis) with those preserved in formaldehyde was carried out using specimens obtained from the Schlei fjord in the western Baltic Sea. Length-weight relationships calculated separately for adults and juvenile stages indicate that fixation in a hexamethylene-tetramine buffered 4% solution of formaldehyde in freshwater results in a 30 to 35% average dry weight loss compared to fresh material dried after rinsing in deionized water. No obvious differences in the effects of formaldehyde on the various developmental stages were observed. The results are compared with published data for four other copepod species. |
