Abstract
The spatial and numerical distribution of juvenile and adult lugworm populations on an intertidal mud flat in the western Wadden Sea is described. Density of juveniles and adults appeared to be related to intertidal height and distance from the shore line. High densities of juvenile worms always occur in places where the numbers of adults are relatively low. Nearshore Arenicola nurseries are considered to be indispensable for the recruitment of the standing stock of adult worms.
