Effects of crowding were investigated with respect to growth and feeding, mortality and health of young growing bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana. Newly metamorphosed bullfrogs were stocked in groups of 5, 10, 15 and 20 per containers having 127,5 square inches of floor space. Three replicates of each level of crowding were maintained for five months on a diet of living mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). No statistically significant differences were found with regard to growth and food consumption among the several groups (P<.01). All differences were due to causes other than crowding. Mortality and health also were not affected by the crowding levels employed. Acceptability of non-living food (frozen mosquitofish) was also studied. Some bullfrogs will accept non-living food with no previous feeding experiences and make gains comparable to those fed living food. |
