Abstract
A total of 248 adult bowfin were collected from Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge and other locations in southern Louisiana. The fish ranged in size from 25 to 71,6 cm in total length and from 0,2 to 9,4 pounds in weight. Fish were collected using a shocker, rod and reel, rotenone, trammel nets, seines and trot lines. Bowfin taken with rotenone were not used for stomach analysis. Adult stomachs were analysed as to frequency of occurrence, weight and volume. The major food item groups found were Crustacea, Pisces and Insecta. Grass shrimp and crawfish made up the bulk of the crustaceans, while least killifish, striped mullet, mosquito-fish, yellow bullhead, bluegill and unidentified fish comprised the fish. Only one gamefish, a bluegill, was found in a bowfin stomach. No obvious differences in food habits of adult bowfin with relation to locations, size, sex or season were noted.
