Abstract
An investigation is made concerning the possibility to use natural fluorescence as a tracer, in addition to salinity, in order to make a distinction between 2 components of fresh water in the Dutch Wadden Sea and the adjacent North Sea. It is shown that, although rather crude, this distinction can be made and that the western Dutch Wadden Sea can roughly be divided in 2 parts of which the southern one contains more water from the river Rhine than the northern one. The fresh water discharged from the Ijsselmeer into the Wadden Sea diminishes rapidly in concentration outside the tidal inlets.
