| Abstract |
The characterization of bottom sediments largely depends on subjective observation of color, odor, texture, and stream location. Through the use of routine COD and Kjeldahl N tests, a system has been developed to yield objective information that can be specifically correlated to the source of deposit and probable influence on underlying water. Laboratory examination of more than 200 sediment samples from a variety of streams, lakes, and estuaries was used to classify bottom deposits into 4 general types on the basis of percentages of organic C and N. The product of the percentages was used as an index of the organic nature of the sediment. The correlation of the Organic Sediment Index with stream loading and flow characteristics was demonstrated in 3 rivers, 2 estuaries, and 2 eutrophic lakes. |
