Abstract
    In 7 °C laboratory cultures the nematode Oncholaimus brachcercus needs for its life cycle 399 days; Desmodora scaldensis, 603 days; Halichoanolaimus robustus, much longer. In the last species, eggs lived for 150 days between deposition and the hatching of juveniles; in Anticoma pellucida, Oncholaimus brachycercus and Desmodora scaldensis, 43-44 days. The observations on Oncholaimus brachycercus are in accordance with an analysis of natural populations. Probably in this species there is one, and in favorable warm years 2 generations per year, under North Sea climate, while in Desmodora scaldensis and Halichoanolaimus robustus similar to 2 years are needed to complete their life cycles. This is in contrast with short generation times observed in other free living nematodes. There is no strict relation between generation time and body weight.
