| Abstract |
The suspected role of international commercial oyster transplantations in the dispersal of the invasive brown alga S. muticum (Yendo) Fensholt is confirmed. Recent importations into the Netherlands of oysters from the eastern Solent area of southern Britain were found to contain attached individuals of S. muticum . The recently discovered Dutch populations of Sargassum most probably developed independently from fertile drift material, the documented find of which preceded the occurrence of attached plants. The further spread of the alga and possible consequences of this discovery are discussed. |
