Abstract
This paper reviews and discusses the use of quantitative cytochemical procedures in the determination of cellular responses to physical and chemical environmental stressors. The two systems which are considered to have the most immediate useful application to pollutant problems in the marine environment include the deleterious or cytotoxic effects of various stressors on lysosomal integrity and the induction of NADPH neotetrazolium reductase activity (associated with mixed-function oxygenases) by organic xenobiotics. These systems are discussed in terms of their correlations with morphological, biochemical and physiological parameters, while the possible utilization of other cytochemically determined responses is also extrapolated to marine organisms.
