Abstract
    A simple automatic feeding device for suspension-feeding organisms is described. Mussels (M. edulis) were fed with a variety of freshly dried and finely-ground plant and animal debris to evaluate the effects of non-living food on growth. For comparison, controls were fed with Dunaliella marina and Isochrysis galbana. Whereas controls showed significant growth, the experimental animals showed a significant decrease in initial weight and a relatively high mortality. The possible explanations for this are discussed. The importance of minute unicellular algae rich in carbohydrates in the growth of mussels is reconfirmed and further evidence is given that pure plant and animal debris, given exclusively as food, have nonutritive value for mussels.
