The hypothesis that humic stain discharge by a pulp mill sited at the head of Alberni Inlet was responsible for an O2 deficiency by blocking sub-halocline photosynthesis was tested by 2 experimental methods. In the short term (4-5 h) no production could be demonstrated using the 14C method and exposing sub- halocline water to light. In the longer term an intense phytoplankton bloom occurred after a 3-day lag period. It was concluded that removal of humic stain from the pulpmill effluent will result in renewed O2 production below the halocline. |
