Abstract
Reliable procedures for cryopreservation of the gametes of marine fish and invertebrates are urgently needed for developing aquaculture of specially bred strains. Availability of the eggs by the millions and external fertilization offer special methodologic advantages. The seawater medium and the acrosome reaction of the invertebrates pose new problems. A cytogenetic study was made of the eggs of the commercial American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, after being challenged with its cryopreserved sperm.
