Abstract
The acontiarian or Acontia-bearing anemones are readily recognizable on this character alone, and although certain athenarian anemones possess acontia, not one of these is known from the intertidal of central California. The Acontiaria are generally recognized as the most complex and highly evolved of the sea anemones. They possess, in general, a more complex cnidom than other groups plus such remarkable structures as catch-tentacles and, of course, the Acontia.
