| Abstract |
For two species of gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus minutus (sand goby) and Pomatoschistus microps, (common goby), the fluctuation in abundance, the growth, production and food consumption were investigated on a tidal flat in the Wadden Sea, the Balgzand, in the course of a year (1975). Estimates of numbers of both species were derived from a sampling programme carried out at two weekly intervals on the Balgzand from April to November. Food consumption on the Balgzand was estimated from food intake experiments in the laboratory. Juvenile gobies in the catches at the end of July. The numbers of juvenileP. minutus remained more or less constant until November, the numbers of juvenile P. microps showed a significant decrease in Summer and Autumn. The total production of biomass between July and November for P. microps was 38 gr. ashfree dry weight/1000m2. The consumption in this period for P. minutus and P. microps was estimated at about 2980 and about 3970 gr. (fresh weight) respectively. The efficiency of growth over this period was about 6% for both species. |
