Abstract
The systematic position of the orders within Peracarida is discussed. This leads to the reconstruction of an ancestral Tanaidacean type. An overview of the comparative morphology of the appendages shows that there are four different phylogenetic lines, each represented by a suborder: Anthracocaridomorpha, Apseudomorpha, Neotanaidomorpha, and Tanaidomorpha. Because our knowledge of morphology and anatomy of the Apseudoidea is rather poor, only a first approximation of a natural arrangement of this superfamily can be attempted. There is much more information for the Tanaidomorpha; and, therefore, the phylogenetic relationships for these are discussed in detail. The established system also allows an interpretation of several other lines of information such as geographical and vertical distribution as well as phylogenetic development of sexual dimorphism.
