Abstract
Recent investigations of the functional morphology of Stomatopoda indicate that the evolution of the predatory stomatopod feeding mechanism was associated with unique mandibular and gastric modifications. These morphological differences, considered in addition to other hoplocaridan features, lend credence to the existence of a hoploid morphotype which evolved from a benthopelagic or benthic detritivore/scavenger. Arguments for and against a polyphyletic origin of the Hoplocarida and Eumalacostraca are discussed in relation to recent morphological and paleontological evidence. These focus on characters diagnostic of the Eumalacostraca and an array of features which describe a discrete hoploid morphotype. The existence of a precaridoid eumalacostracan ancestor for the Hoplocarida is not supported. It is proposed that the Hoplocarida and Eumalacostraca evolved independently from separate 'phyllocarid-like' ancestors.
