Abstract
Dune slacks of the Dutch Wadden Sea islands are sensitive to human influences leading to increased acidification. Wet dune slacks with calciphilous pioneer vegetation, are especially vulnerable to disturbances and the rise and decline of the vegetation is controlled by soil processes that increase and decrease the pH. Processes influencing soil buffering mechanisms are desalinization, decalcification and accumulation of organic matter, Changes in the hydrology affect these processes and may lead to the decline of the calciphilous pioneer vegetation. In this paper the main soil processes and habitat conditions of dune slack species are discussed and a simple typology of dune slacks is presented. The dune slack types distinguished differ in chloride content of surface water, soil lime content and hydrological conditions, such as infiltration or exfiltration. The landscape ecological position of these dune slack types is indicated and represents sites most suitable for the development of calciphilous pioneer vegetation on an 'average' Wadden Sea island.
