Abstract |
Changes in morphology and vegetation by natural processes of a man-made beach-dune system, established in 1978 on natural low sandy barriers, were studied by permanent plots. The following main features in the development between 1978 and 1990 were observed: on the beach a considerable net accumulation of marine sand took place. The zone of dune forming processes has moved seawards from the constructed dune, which in 1978 was planted with Ammophila arenaria, into the upper part of the beach, leaving the constructed dune in a stagnant stage, developing into dune grassland dominated by Festuca rubra. The number of species of vascular plants increased due to dispersal of diaspores from the surroundings and to formation of a stabilized habitat, in which grassland species and shrubs could establish. |
