Abstract
The absence of an adequately-scaled map series on which detailed dune form is represented, allied to the lack of a suitable aerial photograph cover, neccessitates the compilation of original field databases for the mapping of sand dune fields on the south coast of Ireland. The collection of data involves intensive field surveying to highlight the variety of dune surface morphology. The collation and manipulation of the data are executed using computer-based mapping methods to maximise the potential of the data and the quality of graphic output. The dune complex at Long Strand, Rosscarbery Bay, County Cork has been selected for study within this framework as part of an ongoing research project which deals with surface morphology, geomorphology, origin and development of dune areas on the southwest coast of County Cork.
