Abstract
In this thesis we will design a container terminal in the Spanish port of Santander. The yearly number of handled containers is estimated at 100.000. We have chosen to implant the terminal at RAOS 4, which has a total surface of 56.700 m2.As this surface is quite small for the 100.000 containers, we have chosen to use four rubber tired yard gantry cranes to stack the containers on the yard, together with tractors-trailers for moving the containers from the operation area to the stacking yard. The containers will be charged to the ship by two quayside gantry cranes. The boxes that arrive by train will be unloaded by a rail mounted transtainer®. The terminal is divided in four stacking yards, with a total of 2079 TEU ground slots (included empty boxes and reefers) plus a special area for dangerous merchandise. The containers are stacked upon a 40 cm thick layer of gravel and the tractors-trailers circulate on paving stones. The quay is reinforced by beams and pilots under the portainer® rail and by beams where the transtainers® circulate. The total cost for implanting a container terminal at RAOS 4 is estimated at 2.804.942.021 pesetas.
