Abstract
    Fronds water content of fourteen seaweed species was determined by evaporationin an infrared Kett-Electric balance, in order to establish the time required for eachfrond to be taken to dryness. The results shown that the thin laminar frondscorresponding to Ulva, Iridaea andPorphyra and, also, species of the genera Gracilaria and Gigartina present the higher percentages of water content (84-87%) compared to the species of the genera Durvillaea, Mastocarpus and Gelidium (70-74%). Accordingly, species of thick fronds present a longer period of time to become dried than those presenting thin laminar fronds. These results are of great ecological significance and important for the calculation of both, the seaweed bed production and the phycocolloids yield.
