Abstract
Surveying, dredging, and underwater photography were carried out in three contrasting areas on the Carlsberg Ridge in the northwest lndian Ocean: (a) an area on the crest of the ridge, including the median valley, (b) an area in the southern foothills of the ridge, and (c) an area on the axis of the ridge but northwest of the Owen fracture zone, where the mountains are continental in character. The photographs are described relative to the bathymetric profiles beneath the stations and with reference to the rocks dredged in the vicinity. On the crest of the ridge the rocks are fresh, brecciated, and metamorphosed lavas with a thin manganese crust; in the foothills the lavas are more altered and the manganese crust is thick; and in the third area the rocks are not volcanic at all, but are more similar to continental limestones.
