Abstract
Towed underwater-camera systems were used by the U.S. Nava1 Research Laboratory during 1963 and 1964 to photograph major parts of the Thresher (SSN-593) hulk bottomed at 2,500 meters. The equipment and techniques were tailored for the search mission and produced many useful bottom photographs. The photographs contain abundant serendipitous (unsought-for) information about the natural environment in a relatively small area beyond the base of the continenta1 slope. Patterns of pelagic sediment dispersa1 indicate the presence of gentle bottom currents. Remarkably uniform linear patterns of rocks suggest the past occurrence of a high-speed turbidity current. Photographs revea1 the relative abundance and habits of the larger benthos, including some rarely photographed bathypelagic animals. An approximate index of faunal activity may be expressed in the alteration of sediment marks separated in time by one year .
