| Abstract |
This book by one of the world’s leading marine ecologists demonstrates an application of computer models to the study of ocean ecosystems. Developing an approach of broad theoretical interest, John Steele analyzes the flow of energy through marine food webs and compares the results thus obtained with what is known of terrestrial systems. He shows that factors which maintain the plant-herbivore-carnivore balance in terrestrial systems operate quite differently in marine systems, and that current views of the controls governing population and predation on land must be modified in dealing with oceanic phenomena. This book will be of interest to marine biologists, ecologists, and population biologists as well as to those who are interested in the growing applications of computer simulation to biological research. |
