Abstract
The presence of H. Ulvae (Pennant) on the tops of objects left exposed on the shore by the receding tide during summer led to an investigation of the habit in 1966 and 1967. The climbing of shore objects was most prevalent in the upshore region where the larger snails were concentrated. No close correlation could be found between climbing and the onset and duration of the breeding season (which lasted from April to July with a peak in May in both years), but some agreement was obtained when the occurrence of the climbing habit was compared with the seasonal appearance of floating Hydrobia. 0bservation showed that snails could float and disperse most easily off the apices of shore objects.
