Abstract
This paper summarises the research conducted at MUMM in optical remote sensing of Belgian coastal waters during the period 1997-2000. The motivation for this research consists of the need to provide information for marine environmental management of coastal eutrophication and sediment transport related problems. The basic products provided by optical remote sensing are maps of chlorophyll concentration and total suspended matter. A key contribution has been made for the atmospheric correction of SeaWiFS imagery in turbid coastal waters and the corresponding software has been released publicly. Total suspended matter maps are now produced routinely and made available on MUMM’s OceanColour web site. Algorithms have been developed and tested for chlorophyll mapping and await sensors such as MERIS with sufficient spectral resolution.
