| Abstract |
Coastal dunes in the Netherlands are still largely in a semi-natural or near-natural state; a result of regular management brought about the governmental action since the 14th century. The main functions of the coastal dunes are protection of the hinterland, water reservoir, scientific interest and biotic resources, landscape recreation. Main environmental impacts include lowering of the ground water table, infiltration with polluted water, recreational pressures, disturbances from sand extraction, raising of seaward dunes, production of gas and military training. Present-day ecological management is based upon three strategies, viz. internal management, external management and environmental zoning. These strategies are discussed and exemplified, with emphasis on the possible combinations of functions each coastal dune area could exert. |
