Abstract: |
De Operationele Directie (OD) Taxonomie en Fylogenie maakt deel uit van het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen (KBIN), dat in 1846 werd opgericht onder de vroegere naam Koninklijk Natuurhistorisch Museum van België. De groep verricht onderzoek naar biodiversiteit en evolutie van dieren, en meer bepaald naar speciatie, aanpassing, biotische interacties en integratieve taxonomie. Bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar de identificatie en beschrijving van nieuwe taxa (voornamelijk via morfologie en DNA-barcoding), de verspreiding van geïntroduceerde en invasieve soorten, het belang van chemische communicatie bij insecten, de effecten van habitatverstoring, de reconstructie van fylogenetische relaties, de verspreiding en biologie van zoönosen, en het creationisme- versus evolutiedebat.
In deze groep wordt een beperkt aantal mariene taxa bestudeerd. Echinodermen (Echinodermata) (in samenwerking met de wetenschappelijke dienst ""Erfgoed""), schaaldieren (Crustacea), weekdieren (Mollusca), anneliden (partim: Oligochaeta), platwormen (Platyhelminthes) en sponzen (Porifera). De Operationele Directie voert veldwerk uit in verschillende delen van de wereld. Vooral het werk op Antarctica (Zuidelijke Oceaan) is gericht op de zee. Zo is de onderzoeksgroep betrokken bij SCAR-MarBIN, het Antarctische informatienetwerk voor mariene biodiversiteit. Het team draagt tevens bij aan EASIN (European Alien Species Information Network) en was/is betrokken bij verschillende Europese mariene biologische onderzoeksprojecten.
De OD omvat twee gespecialiseerde onderzoeksteams die worden gedeeld met het KMMA (Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika):
- JEMU: De Gezamenlijke Experimentele Moleculaire eenheid;
- BopCo: Barcodingfaciliteit voor organismen en weefsels die van belang zijn voor het beleid.
