Abstract
The Chemical Oceanography Program at the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C. is the major source of funds for chemical oceanographic research in the USA. It selects and funds about 55 new unsolicited basic research proposals and about 125 continuing awards each year out of a budget of $14 million. Ship costs are budgeted separately. The research funded includes projects in paleooceanography, biochemistry, organic chemistry, sediment-seawater transfers, air-sea interaction, hydrothermal vents, global ocean flux, seawater properties, estuarine and river chemistry, and physica! chemistry. The mechanisms by which these projects are selected and a summary of the scientific highlights of the program will be presented.
