Abstract
    More and more 32Si has been used for the last few years as a tracer of biogenic silica production, instead of other methods based upon the use of stable isotopes of silicium, like 29Si or 30Si. These previous methods require very long chemical preparations of the sample before being analysed by mass spectrometry. The main advantage of the use of the radioactive isotope is that no chemical preparation is needed and samples are readily analysed with a standard liquid scintillation counter. Moreover, the specific activity has been increased allowing to use it even in oligotrophic waters, where ambient silicic acid concentrations are very low. The last methodological improvements are being presented, along with some results and the perspectives of use of that isotope.
