Abstract
In the aquifers of many regions of North Germany groundwater salinization can be observed. The reasons for this are sea-water intrusion in the coastal areas, dissolution of evaporites from the salt diapirs and upward movement of older salt waters. The seawater intrusion along the coastline plays a minor role for the water supply because only a few water works are situated there. However alarming phenomena by increasing salinity in different regions of North Germany as a result of groundwater extraction have been detected. The results of hydrochemical investigations show that particular patterns of groundwater types can be differentiated. They are produced by mixing processes of fresh groundwater with salt water from the above mentioned sources. The different types of saline water from different origins of salt water and the influence of exchange processes are discussed as well as its representation in hydrochemical diagrams.
