Abstract
The PIANC (Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses) has recommended several empirical and physics-based formulas for the prediction of ship squat. Some of the most widely used formulas include those of Barrass, Eryuzlu, Huuska, Römisch, and Yoshimura. The Ankudinov empirical formula is used by the Corp‟s ship simulator and has recently been updated. The BNT (Beck, Newman and Tuck) numerical predictions are used in the Corp‟s CADET (Channel Analysis and Design Evaluation Tool) model for predicting underkeel clearance due to ship motions and squat. The purpose of this paper is to compare Ankudinov and BNT predictions with these five PIANC empirical formulas for several ships with measured data from the Panama Canal. These comparisons demonstrate that both the Ankudinov and BNT predictions fall within the range of squat measurements and the PIANC predictions and can be used with confidence in deep draft channel design
