Abstract
More than 400 membrane filters from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans have been scanned for coloured and opaque particles with a method integrating the possibilities of the light microscope, the SEM-EMP and the XRD. About thirty monomineralic types or defined species, and less than 10 types of polymineralic mixtures have been found everywhere in highly variable concentrations. Diagnostic properties and a tentative classification of all types of particles, according to two main categories (anthropogenic and natural) are presented. Copper and lead minerals (malachite, tenorite, laurionite) have been positively identified, and are especially concentrated in Atlantic waters. Technological pigments (mostly rutile) and several other anthropogenic particles have been found everywhere. Contamination of the filters during sampling is discussed in relation with these findings.
