Abstract
The elimination of total ammonia by nitrification has been examined in batch experiments in which samples of attached biofilm material were loaded with pre-settled fish tank effluents. Depending on the ratio of the concentrations of total ammonia and dissolved oxygen, the nitrification reaction could be described either by 1/2-order or 0-order kinetics. The biofilm showed ammonia-diffusion-limitation ( 1/2-order kinetics towards the total ammonia concentration) in case the oxygen/total ammonia concentration ratio exceeded 3:6; in other cases oxygen- diffusion-limitation or metabolism-limitation (1/2-order kinetics towards the total ammonia concentration) occurred. Based on the observed biofilm nitrification kinetics a design philosophy is presented in relation to the diurnal variation of total ammonia production by fish. Attention is paid to: a) size of the reactor; b) required water recirculation rate; c) required total water volume; and d) expected diurnal variation of the total ammonia concentration in the fish tank.
