Abstract
The inflatable enclosure system for aquaculture developed by the French Sea Exploitation Research Institute (IFREMER) is a new device for containment of marine animals during intensive on-growing. The rearing volume boundary consists of a cylindrical chamber made of waterproof plastic membrane. The water flow is injected with a small head, providing oxygen, food and inflating pressure, the latter being generated by passing through the outlet orifice. The expected advantages in terms of rearing performance are the result of a good environmental control combined with properties due to geometry and lightness. IFREMER evaluates this concept which should offer complementary performances to ponds and net cages in terms of site valorisation capacity: results are already available for trout in seawater while future experiments will concern other salmonids in fresh, brackish and marine waters, sea-bass, sea-bream and penaeid shrimps in sea water.
