Abstract
A model of a single-point moored flotilla of six rigid-collar cages was subjected to a test environment of stimulated short-crested seas and wind typical of the extreme conditions which might be generated over a range of short fetches by winds with a mean hourly speed of 35m.s-1 (corresponding to the estimated 50 year storm for the west coast of Scotland). The results of the tests are plotted in the form of graphs which show the effect of fetch length on the peak loads at several points in the mooring system under test. The paper also includes representative plots of the mooring force time series and wave spectral density function. It is concluded that for the system tested, anchor chains should have a strength before failure of the order of 251 so as to withstand extreme storm conditions exceeded only once in 50 years with a factor of safety of three to allow for corrosion and wear in service.
