Abstract
The active ingredient of Flumiquil® is a fluorinated quinolone, invented by Riker/3M, and very active against Aeromonas, Yersinia, Vibrio, Edwardiella, Pasteurella at inhibitory concentrations of less than 1ug.ml-1. In fish, maximum serum levels are reached 1 and 2h after administration either by bath or by medicated feed. The 3% Flumiquil® suspension can also be administered by intramuscular or intraperitoneal route. In feed, the dosage of 12mg of active ingredient per kg of fish per day during 6 days is recommended. During the treatment period the levels are higher than 1.5g.g-1 in the tissues of the muscle and gills, and 3.2g.g-1 in those of the liver. The efficiency of Flumiquil® treatments against furunculosis, red mouth disease, and Vibriosis is well-known in France since 1980, and also in Europe and Southeast Asia. Many experimental trials conducted in fresh- and seawater indicated a very interesting protection. In contrast to the majority of antibiotics which have become less efficient due to polyresistant microorganisms, the activity of this synthetic antibacterial remains constant. Furthermore it is tolerated quite well even at doses five times the therapeutic dosage administered during 15 days. At the end of the Flumiquil® treatment, the very rapid excretion of the product and its metabolites ensure complete safety for the consumer, as far as the withdrawal period of 48h is respected.
