Abstract
The digestibility of three diets containing 20, 40, and 60% carob-seed germ meal (CSGM) in the small intestine, the anterior, and the posterior half of the rectum were examined. Trypsin and alpha-amylase activities were also determined in the small intestine and in the posterior half of the rectum. The control diet had fishmeal as main protein source. The digestibility of dry matter was found to decline as the CSGM percentage increased, in all parts of the digestive tract. The same was generally observed for the protein digestibility. The CSGM protein digestibilities were similar at the small intestine. These generally increased at the anterior half of the rectum and did not show any appreciable change afterwards. The enzyme activity in the small intestine appeared to be relatively depressed compared to that of the control, while the opposite was apparent for the posterior half of the rectum. Increased enzymatic activity of the rectum content is possibly an indication of an increased excretion of the enzymes to surpass the negative effect of GSGM antinutritional compounds.
