Abstract
    The number of pyloric caeca in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Rich.) can vary between 37 and 101 and can be genetically selected. However, the function of caeca is still largely unknown. Salmo gairdneri were genetically selected in order to obtain 12 stocks of fish with increasing number of pyloric caeca, from 45±4 to 89±9. Lots of 20 fish were fed once a day (at 13-15°C) a lipid poor (5% fat) or a lipid-rich (16% fat) diet. Faeces were automatically collected. Diets and faeces were analyzed for dry matter, total energy protein, amino acids, and carbohydrate. Digestibility coefficients were calculated indirectly (chromic oxide). Results show that ingested food was the same for all stocks; digestibility coefficients were not statistically different except for energy and carbohydrate which were higher for the fat diet whatever the group of fish. Some variations regarding the amino acid profile of the faeces were obtained with respect to the number of pyloric caeca.
